When Does Early Voting Start? Early Voting Dates for 2026, State by State
There is no single national date: each state sets its own early voting period. For the November 3, 2026 election, Texas votes early October 19–30, Ohio from October 6 through November 1, North Carolina October 15–31 and Georgia October 13–30. The table gives the dates for 27 states, each cited to an official page.
- There is no national start date for early voting: each state sets its own period, and NCSL puts the average start at 27 days before the election. [1][3]
- Texas: early voting runs from Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 30, 2026. [36][37]
- Ohio: early in-person voting starts Tuesday, October 6 and ends Sunday, November 1; North Carolina: October 15 to 3 p.m. October 31; Georgia: October 13–30. [11][27][28]
- In the Ledger’s 27-state table, the earliest dates are October 4–5 (Maine, California, Montana, Nebraska) and the latest start is October 29 (Kentucky). [9][15][18][22][23]
- Alabama and New Hampshire list no early voting period, Oregon votes by mail and drop site, and Pennsylvania offers mail ballots voted in one visit to a county election office. [5][25][32][33]
Early voting for the November 3, 2026 general election does not start on one national date. Federal law fixes Election Day itself, the “Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year,” [2] but voting before that day runs on each state’s calendar. USA.gov, a federal government website, says “most states let you vote in person during a designated early voting period” and tells voters to contact their state or local election office to find out when and where to vote early. [1]
Among the 27 states in the table below, the earliest start dates listed are October 4 or 5, in Maine, California, Montana and Nebraska, [9][18][22][23] and the latest is October 29 in Kentucky, where the no-excuse period lasts three days. [15] Texas votes early October 19–30; [36] Ohio, October 6–November 1; [28] North Carolina, October 15–31; [27] and Georgia, October 13–30. [11]
When does early voting start? It depends on your state
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), whose state map USA.gov links to, reported that as of April 2026, 47 states and the District of Columbia “offer early in-person voting to all voters (this includes states with all-mail elections),” while Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire do not. [1][3] By NCSL’s count, early in-person voting “may begin as early as 50 days before the election, or as late as the Friday before the election”; the average start is 27 days before the election, and periods run from three to 46 days, averaging 20. [3]
The name varies, too. NCSL separates early voting, which “functions similarly to Election Day voting,” from in-person absentee voting, in which “a voter requests, completes and signs an absentee ballot in a polling place.” [3] USA.gov’s practical advice: “you may need to check under ‘absentee voting’ if you do not see information listed for early voting.” [1] Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Wisconsin and Wyoming are among the states where official pages use absentee wording for voting in person before Election Day. [14][15][18][21][22][41][42]

Early voting Texas 2026: October 19 to October 30
“Early voting by personal appearance for the November 3, 2026 Election begins on October 19, 2026 and ends on October 30, 2026.”
Texas Secretary of State, VoteTexas.gov Early Voting FAQs [36]
The Secretary of State’s date list gives the weekdays: Monday, October 5 is the last day to register to vote, Monday, October 19 the first day of early voting by personal appearance and Friday, October 30 the last. [37] The dates follow a standing rule: early voting in person “begins the 17th day before Election Day (if that’s a weekend, early voting starts on Monday) and ends the 4th day before Election Day.” [38] Any registered voter may vote early in person, at any early voting location in the county of registration. [36] Locations are loaded into the state’s My Voter Portal two days before the first day of early voting. [39] Full rules: Texas voting guide.
When does early voting end in Texas?
Friday, October 30, 2026 is the last day of early voting by personal appearance. [37] Voters who miss that window can vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, when voting hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at all polling places statewide. [39]
Early voting Ohio: when does early voting start in Ohio?
Early in-person voting in Ohio starts Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. and ends Sunday, November 1, at 5:00 p.m., according to schedules printed by the Montgomery County and Franklin County boards of elections. [28][29] State law makes absent voter’s ballots available the day after registration closes: they “shall be printed and ready for use on the first day after the close of voter registration before the election.” [30]
Both boards print the same hours: weekdays through October 23, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays October 24 and 31, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; October 26 and 28–30, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, October 27, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, November 1, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., which Franklin County labels the “Final Day of Early Voting.” Neither lists hours for Monday, November 2. [28][29] Full rules: Ohio voting guide.
Early voting NC: October 15 to October 31
In North Carolina, in-person early voting starts Thursday, October 15, and ends at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 31, 2026. [27] Voters may use “any early voting site in their county,” and people who are not registered in the county “may register and immediately vote at that same site.” [27] The State Board of Elections says voters “will be asked to show photo ID when they check in to vote,” and its page links an Early Voting Site Search and a list of early voting sites for this election. [27] Full rules: North Carolina voting guide.
Georgia 2026: advance voting runs October 13–30
Georgia calls early voting advance voting; for the November 3, 2026 general election it runs October 13 through October 30. [11][12] The Secretary of State’s calendar explains the Tuesday start: advance voting “must begin the fourth Monday before each primary or election,” and the date was “moved to next business day due to state holiday.” [11] Counties must hold Saturday voting on October 17 and October 24 and may add Sunday voting on October 18 and/or October 25. [11] “You can vote at any early voting location in your county,” the Secretary of State says; My Voter Page lists locations. [13] Full rules: Georgia voting guide.
Before you go: what to check
- Your registration. A deadline can fall before early voting opens: in Texas it is Monday, October 5, two weeks before the first early voting day. [37] See how to register and each state’s deadline.
- Your site and its hours. Texas, North Carolina and Georgia let a voter use any early voting location in the county. [13][27][36] If your state is not in the table, start with USA.gov’s “State and local election offices” page. [4]
- What to bring. North Carolina, for example, asks for photo ID at check-in; [27] each state guide lists its state’s rules, and the voter ID explainer compares them.
- The mail option. Mail ballots run on separate deadlines: in Texas the last day to apply for a ballot by mail is Friday, October 23 (received, not postmarked). [37] See voting by mail and absentee ballots.
- Election Day as the backstop. If you miss early voting, see when Election Day is and what time polls open and close.
