What Time Do Polls Close on Election Day 2026? Poll Hours, State by State

It depends on your state. Among the 27 states the Ledger has verified, the statewide closing times printed for Tuesday, November 3, 2026 run from 6:00 p.m. local time in Kentucky to 8:00 p.m. in states such as California, Michigan and Pennsylvania; New Hampshire sets hours locally. Here are the hours, the stay-in-line rule where a state prints one, and each state's official polling-place lookup.

Key points
  • States set poll hours; USA.gov tells voters to contact their state or local election office for a polling place's hours [1].
  • In the 27 verified states, the statewide closing times printed run from 6:00 p.m. local time in Kentucky [21] to 8:00 p.m. in states such as California, Michigan and Pennsylvania [12][29][51]; Texas and Florida close at 7:00 p.m. [57][15], and North Carolina and Ohio at 7:30 p.m. [42][44].
  • Many state pages say a voter already in line at closing time can still vote; Pennsylvania's reads, “if you are in line by 8 p.m., you can vote” [51].
  • Go to your assigned polling place: USA.gov says your name will not be on the roster anywhere else, and the location can change between elections [1].
  • These are Election Day hours; early voting sites keep different schedules, as the Texas Secretary of State's page notes [57].

There is no single national time. Federal law fixes the day of a congressional election — “the Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year” [2] — which in 2026 is Tuesday, November 3 [21]. The hours are left to the states: USA.gov tells voters, “To find your polling place and its hours, contact your state or local election office” [1].

The Conservative Ledger has checked poll hours against official pages for 27 states; the statewide closing times printed run from 6:00 p.m. local time in Kentucky [21] to 8:00 p.m. in Pennsylvania and others [51]. For the date itself, see when Election Day 2026 is.

When do polls close on Election Day 2026?

  • 6:00 p.m. local time: Kentucky [21].
  • 7:00 p.m.: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Wyoming [7][10][15][17][31][36][46][52][57][60].
  • 7:30 p.m.: North Carolina and Ohio [42][44].
  • 8:00 p.m.: Alaska, California, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin [9][12][18][23][26][29][32][40][51][58]; Nebraska closes at 8 p.m. Central time, 7 p.m. Mountain [34].
  • Special cases: New Hampshire sets hours locally, closing “not earlier than 7 o'clock in the evening” [37]; the Tennessee Secretary of State pages reviewed print no statewide hour and point to the GoVoteTN lookup [55]; Oregon votes by mail [49].

What time do polls open?

Opening times vary more: polls open at 6:00 a.m. in Arizona, Kentucky, Missouri and New Jersey [10][21][31][40], at 6:30 a.m. in North Carolina and Ohio [42][44], and at 7:00 a.m. in most others, including California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas [12][15][17][29][51][57]. Nebraska opens at 8 a.m. Central time, 7 a.m. Mountain [34].

Maine's voting places open “between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., depending on the population of the town” [26]. Montana polling places with a net of fewer than 400 registered voters (registered minus absentee) may open after 7:00 a.m., but no later than noon [32]. New Hampshire law requires only that polls open “not later than 11 o'clock in the morning,” and in cities the city council sets the hours [37].

Louisiana needs a second look. The Secretary of State's voting page gives 6 a.m. for Tuesday elections [23]; the statute sets 7:00 a.m. for “the primary and general elections” and 6:00 a.m. for “regularly scheduled congressional primary elections and elections held at the same time” [24]. Both close at 8 p.m. [23][24]. Confirm the opening hour with your parish registrar of voters.

As of September 17, 2026. Hours and lookups come from The Conservative Ledger's verified state guides and the official pages cited; Ohio's in-line rule is from the Ohio Revised Code [45]. Nevada, Ohio and Wisconsin hours are as printed by the county or city election offices cited. A dash means the cited page is silent, not that the state has no such rule. The other 23 states and the District of Columbia have no verified Ledger guide yet; for those, use the federal directory of election offices [4].

Iowa: 8:00 p.m., not 9:00 As of September 17, 2026, one sentence on the Iowa Secretary of State's page for military and overseas voters still says “the polls close at 9 p.m. (CST)”; another on the same page says 8 p.m. (CT) [19]. The state's November 2026 election page and its polling-place lookup both say 8:00 p.m. [18][20]

What time do polls close in PA, Ohio, Texas and NC?

What time do polls close in PA?

8 p.m. Pennsylvania polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the Department of State adds, “if you are in line by 8 p.m., you can vote” [51]. The same page links to the state's polling place search and lists a hotline, 1-877-VOTESPA [51]. See the Pennsylvania guide.

What time do polls close in Ohio?

7:30 p.m. Ohio polls open at 6:30 a.m. and remain open until 7:30 p.m. [44]; state law keeps a polling place open past that hour until voters “waiting in line to cast their ballots” have voted [45]. The Ledger's verified Ohio guide lists no statewide polling-place tool; start with your county board of elections or USA.gov's directory of election offices [4].

What time do polls close in Texas?

7:00 p.m. “Election Day voting hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at all polling places statewide,” the Secretary of State's site says [57]. Voting sites appear in its My Voter Portal two days before Election Day. In counties in the Countywide Polling Place Program, “you can vote at any location in your county of residence”; elsewhere, only at your assigned precinct [57]. See the Texas guide.

What time do polls close in NC?

7:30 p.m. North Carolina polling places are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the State Board of Elections says: “Any voter in line at their assigned polling place at 7:30 p.m. will be able to vote” [42]. Its Election Day Polling Place Search works by address or by precinct [43]. See the North Carolina guide.

If you are in line when polls close

In many states a voter already in line at closing time still gets to vote. Official pages or statutes say so for Arizona [10], California [13], Florida [15], Georgia [17], Kentucky [21], Louisiana [23], Maine [27], Missouri [31], New Jersey [40], North Carolina [42], Ohio [45], Pennsylvania [51], South Carolina [53] and Wyoming [61].

That does not cover late arrivals. Alabama's voter guide says anyone who attempts to join the voting line after 7:00 P.M. “shall not be permitted to vote” [7], and Missouri's FAQ says people arriving after the polling place has closed “will not be allowed to vote” [31].

Time zones: which clock counts?

Florida, Kentucky and Michigan print “local time” [15][21][29]. Nebraska prints both of its zones [34], and Iowa labels its hours CT [18]. Alabama's guide says polling places in the Eastern Time Zone “may be open from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. Eastern Time” [7]. Most other pages cited here print no time zone.

Where do I vote? Official polling-place lookups

USA.gov is direct: “Go to your assigned voting location. Your name will not be on the roster at any other location” [1]. A polling place “may change from one election to the next,” it adds, and a voter at the wrong one may have to use a provisional ballot that may not count [1].

The table's last column names each official lookup. Some differ: Florida's page sends voters to their county, with a link for each of the 67 [16]. Arizona's statewide search sends Maricopa and Pima county voters to county sites [11]. Maine warns that voting place locations can be updated “up to ten days prior to the election” [28], and New Jersey said on September 17, 2026 that its location data “is currently being updated” [41]. Oregon's Drop Box Locator “will become available after ballots are mailed to voters 20 days before the next statewide election” [50].

For any other state, USA.gov's directory of state and local election offices [4] and the National Association of Secretaries of State's Can I Vote page, which USA.gov links to, lead to each state's lookup or election officials [1][5]. USA.gov's guidance is also in Spanish [6].

Election Day hours are not early-voting hours

These are Election Day hours only. Early voting sites keep their own schedules — the Texas page says “Polling place hours vary at each early voting location” [57]; see when early voting starts in 2026. Closing time can also be a mail-ballot deadline: South Carolina says absentee ballots “must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day” [52], and Iowa's must reach the county auditor “prior to 8:00 p.m. CT on Election Day” [18]. See the absentee and mail voting guide.
