The Secretary of State's voting page tells voters to be prepared to show a photo identification card with their photo and signature, or a United States military identification card that contains their name and picture. Its early-voting page lists a driver's license, a Louisiana special ID, the LA Wallet digital driver's license or some other generally recognized picture ID that has your name and signature. A voter without photo ID may vote by affidavit after correctly answering identifying information. State law (R.S. 18:562) adds that the affidavit includes the voter's date of birth and mother's maiden name, and that a voter who votes without picture identification is subject to challenge. Louisiana requires a reason to vote absentee by mail, unless you are a military or overseas voter. The Secretary of State's absentee-voting page lists the qualifying categories, among them: voters 65 years of age or older; voters temporarily outside Louisiana or their parish during the early voting period and on election day; people working offshore; students, instructors or professors living outside their parish of registration; clergy assigned outside their parish; voters who expect to be hospitalized on election day; sequestered jurors; Address Confidentiality Program participants; and voters who are physically disabled or homebound. You may request a ballot by logging in to the Louisiana Voter Portal as the voter, or print an application and deliver it to your parish registrar of voters by U.S. Postal Service, commercial carrier, hand delivery or fax. A voted ballot may be returned by mail (including commercial carrier), by hand delivery by the voter or an immediate family member, or by fax upon request to the registrar. Early voting is done in person at the parish registrar of voters office or at other locations designated in the parish. State law (R.S. 18:1309) sets the period at fourteen days to seven days before a scheduled election, with offices open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Secretary of State's Early Voting Locations page lists the sites in every parish and cautions that a location “May be open limited dates,” so check your location in the Louisiana Voter Portal or with your registrar. Early voting for the November 3, 2026 election runs from October 20 through October 27, 2026 on the Secretary of State's calendar. Registrars' offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on early-voting days, Monday through Saturday, so there is no early voting on Sunday, October 25.
Polls close at 8 p.m., and all voters in line at 8 p.m. have the right to vote. The Secretary of State's voting page says polls open at 6 a.m. for Tuesday elections such as November 3, 2026 (7 a.m. for Saturday elections); confirm the opening hour in the Louisiana Voter Portal.
