No. Election Day is not a federal holiday. The federal holiday statute, 5 U.S.C. § 6103, lists 11 legal public holidays, from New Year's Day to Christmas Day, and Election Day is not one of them. ^[1] The Office of Personnel Management's 2026 calendar for federal employees shows the same 11 holidays; the two nearest the election are Columbus Day on Monday, October 12, and Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11. ^[2]

So Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is a regular business day for federal offices, the Postal Service, the Federal Reserve and the New York Stock Exchange. ^[2][3][5][6] What does change from place to place is state law: several states make the general election day a legal holiday, and whether schools hold class is decided state by state and district by district. Is Election Day a federal holiday? What the law says

Congress fixed the date of the election in one statute and the list of holidays in another. Under 2 U.S.C. § 7, members of the U.S. House are elected on “the Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year” — in 2026, November 3. ^[7] That sentence is the whole section; it sets a date and says nothing about a holiday. ^[7] The Ledger explains the date itself in when Election Day is and why it falls on a Tuesday.

The holidays are in § 6103(a): New Year's Day; the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Washington's Birthday; Memorial Day; Juneteenth National Independence Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Columbus Day; Veterans Day; Thanksgiving Day; and Christmas Day. ^[1] The U.S. House's online U.S. Code showed that text as the law in effect on September 16, 2026. ^[1] The only election-related date in the section is Inauguration Day, January 20 of every fourth year, which subsection (c) makes a holiday for federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area. ^[1]

The last three words matter. The list is written for federal employees' pay and leave, and the Postal Service, the Federal Reserve, the stock exchange, banks, states and school districts each publish their own schedules. ^[1][2] That is why the practical answer has to be checked institution by institution.

Is the post office open on Election Day?

Yes. The Postal Service's list of 2026 holidays has 11 entries, the same 11 holidays as the federal list, and November 3 is not among them. ^[2][3] The list runs from Columbus Day on Monday, October 12, straight to Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11. ^[3]

Is there mail delivery on Election Day?

Yes, for the same reason: it is not a postal holiday. ^[3] If the real question is about a mail ballot, though, delivery on Election Day is not the issue; timing is. The Postal Service's “general recommendation” is to mail a completed ballot “before Election Day, and at least one week prior to the deadline by which your completed ballot must be received by your election office.” ^[4]

The Postal Service adds that a voter who wants the postmark to carry the date of mailing can ask a clerk at a Post Office counter to hand-cancel the envelope, free of charge. ^[4] Receipt deadlines differ by state; the Ledger's guide to absentee and mail ballots lists them.

Are banks open on Election Day?

Election Day is not a bank holiday under the Federal Reserve's calendar. The Board's schedule of holidays observed by the Federal Reserve System lists 11 dates for 2026, the same holidays as the federal statute, and none is November 3. ^[1][5]

Whether a given branch is open is the bank's own decision. The federal rule for national banks, 12 CFR 7.3000, says a bank's board should “establish a schedule of operating hours for customers” and should do so “independently of any other bank.” ^[8] In a state that treats Election Day as a legal holiday, confirm your branch's hours before you go.

Is the stock market open on Election Day?

Yes. • Montana: the legal holidays in Mont. Code Ann. § 1-1-216 include “state general election day.” ^[11]
• New Hampshire: RSA 288:1 makes “the day on which the biennial election is held” a legal holiday. ^[12]
• New Jersey: N.J.S.A. 36:1-1 lists “any general election day in this State” among the public holidays that apply to the business of State and county public offices. ^[13]
• North Carolina: G.S. 103-4 declares a legal public holiday on the “Tuesday after the first Monday in November in years in which a general election is to be held.” ^[14]
• Wisconsin: Wis. Stat. § 995.20 makes “the day of holding the general election in November” a legal holiday, along with the day of the partisan primary. ^[16]
• Tennessee: Tenn. Code Ann. § 15-1-101 makes legal holidays of “all days set apart by law for holding county, state, or national elections, throughout this state.” ^[17]
• Florida: section 683.01, Florida Statutes, lists “General Election Day” among the state's legal holidays. ^[10]
• Louisiana: under the heading “Legal holidays shall be observed by the departments of the state,” R.S. 1:55 directs that, “insofar as may be practicable in the administration of the government,” no employee work on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years. ^[18]
• Ohio: part of the day only. R.C. 5.20 makes the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November a legal holiday “between the hours of twelve noon, eastern standard time, and five-thirty p.m., eastern standard time.” ^[15]
• Oklahoma: 25 O.S. § 82.2 designates “each day in which a state election is held throughout the State of Oklahoma” an additional holiday, then provides that any act “may and shall be performed on said day the same as on any business day.” ^[19]
• Kentucky: not in 2026. KRS 2.190 creates a state holiday, with state offices and schools closed, only on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November “in Presidential election years.” ^[20]

What a “legal holiday” actually closes depends on the rest of each state's law. New Jersey's statute is written around the presentment of checks and notes and “the transaction of business in the public offices of this State, or counties of this State” ^[13]; Oklahoma's says business goes on as on any other day. ^[19] Before a trip to a state or county office on November 3, check that office's hours.

Is there school on Election Day?

There is no national rule. The U.S. Department of Education describes education as “primarily a State and local responsibility in the United States,” and school calendars follow that pattern. ^[9] Three statutes from board states show how differently it plays out:

• Kentucky: the local board of education adopts the school calendar, including the “days on which schools shall be dismissed,” and if any school in the district is used as a voting place the district “may be closed on the days of the election.” ^[22]
• Montana: no instruction on “State and national election days when the school building is used as a polling place and the conduct of school would interfere with the election process at the polling place.” ^[21]
• Louisiana: the holiday statute, R.S. 1:55, lists the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years “for public schools in any parish where the parish governing authority has established a polling place at a public school.” ^[18]
