How to Register to Vote in Time for the November 3, 2026 Election

Start at vote.gov or your state election office, and register online, by mail or in person. There is no national deadline: each state sets its own, and in the 27 states in the table below the earliest cutoffs arrive in the first days of October.

Key points
  • There is no national voter registration deadline; each state and territory sets its own rules, and vote.gov routes you to your state's official page. [1]
  • Federal law requires the states it covers to offer registration with a driver's license application, by mail and in person; whether you can also register online depends on your state. [2][6]
  • October 5, 2026 is the regular deadline in nine of the 27 states in the Ledger's table: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. [12][15][18][22][23][29][38][46][47]
  • Nine states in the table describe a way to register through Election Day itself, and North Carolina offers same-day registration during early voting. [14][21][24][26][29][32][33][36][50][51]
  • A registration application for a federal election carries a driver's license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number. [8]

To register to vote in the November 3, 2026 general election, start at vote.gov, the federal government's registration site, and select your state or territory to find its instructions. [1][2] Depending on your state's rules, you can register online, by mail or in person at your local election office. [2]

There is no national voter registration deadline. “Each state and territory sets its own rules for registering to vote,” vote.gov says. [1] USAGov adds that the deadline “could be as much as a month before an election” and that every state except North Dakota requires registration. [3] Dates below are as of September 17, 2026.

How to register to vote: online, by mail or in person

Federal law requires each state it covers to offer registration in three ways: with a driver's license application, by mail, and in person. [6] Whether you can also register online depends on your state's rules. [2]

  1. Online. On vote.gov, select your state or territory to register, to update your name, address or political party, or to check your registration status. [1]
  2. By mail. Download the National Mail Voter Registration Form, fill it out onscreen or by hand, follow your state's instructions (they begin on page 3), sign it, and mail it with postage to your state or local election office. [2][5] The EAC publishes the form in Spanish and other languages, and USAGov publishes these instructions in Spanish. [5][9]
  3. In person. Check with your local election office; USAGov also lists motor vehicle offices and state and county public assistance offices. [2]

What you need to register to vote

USAGov says that in most cases you need a driver's license or a state ID, that people without either “may be able to provide other types of documentation, including a bank statement or utility bill,” and that the required documents vary by state. [2]

A federal rule sits behind that: a state may not accept or process a registration application for a federal election unless it carries the applicant's driver's license number or, for other applicants, the last four digits of the Social Security number. A person who has neither is assigned an identifying number by the state. [8]

Federal law also has states ask some first-time voters who registered by mail to show identification when they vote: a current and valid photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document showing name and address. The requirement does not apply to a person who sent a copy of such a document with the registration, or whose driver's license or Social Security digits the state matched to an existing record. [8] Your state election office can say whether it applies to you. [4]

Voter registration deadline by state: November 3, 2026

Federal law requires the states it covers to register an eligible applicant whose valid form is postmarked or received “not later than the lesser of 30 days, or the period provided by State law, before the date of the election.” [7] Within that limit each state picks its date and how to measure it: a postmark, receipt at an office, or a clock time online, as the rows below show.

As of September 17, 2026. Dates are copied from the Ledger's verified state guides, which quote each state's election office; the Ohio, Nevada and Wisconsin rows quote county or city election offices, and New Hampshire's guide has no dated deadline, so its row cites state law. Not in the table, because the Ledger has no verified guide for them: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. How to register to vote in Texas, and the last day to register to vote in Texas

The last day to register to vote in Texas in time for the November 3, 2026 election is October 5, 2026; Texas law sets the deadline at the 30th day before Election Day. [47] The application counts if it is postmarked, or received in the county voter registrar's office, by that date, and a registration takes effect 30 days after it is submitted and accepted. [48]

Applications are available from the voter registrar's office, libraries, most post offices and high schools. You can also request a postage-paid application or fill one out online, but VoteTexas.gov notes that “you must print the completed application and send it to your county voter registrar's office.” [48] Registered Texans who moved or changed their name can update online through Texas.gov. [47] More dates: the Texas voting guide.

Florida's Division of Elections lists these routes: online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov; through a tax collector's office that issues Florida driver licenses or state ID cards, or a designated voter registration agency; and by mail or in person with the statewide application, Form DS-DE 39. [17] The deadline is 29 days before an election, which is October 5, 2026, and 16-year-olds may pre-register. [15][17] See the Florida voting guide.

To register online in Georgia you must have a valid driver's license or an identification card issued by the Georgia Department of Driver Services; otherwise, download the paper application, complete it and mail it according to the instructions on the form. [19] You must be at least 17 1/2 to register and 18 to vote. [19] The deadline is October 5, 2026. [18] See the Georgia voting guide.

The State of Ohio's elections page sends applicants to the Secretary of State's online voter registration system to register or update their information, and says a county board of elections can also check or update a registration. [39] The Clark County Board of Elections says to visit voteohio.gov to register or update online, to send completed paper forms to your county board of elections or the Secretary of State's Office, and that a properly completed form must be postmarked or received by October 5, 2026. [38] See the Ohio voting guide.

Pennsylvania's Department of State says you can register “online, by mail, or at a number of government agencies,” PennDOT photo license and driver's license centers among them, and that you must register at least 15 days before the election. [43] In 2026 that day is October 19, and the application must reach your county board of elections by then. [43][44] See the Pennsylvania voting guide.

Register to vote: NC (North Carolina)

North Carolina's State Board of Elections says existing N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles customers may apply online; the state application, offered in English and Spanish, can be submitted by mail. [37] The deadline is 25 days before Election Day, which is 5 p.m. on October 9, 2026; a person who misses it “may still be able to register and vote” during early voting, October 15 to October 31. [36][37] See the North Carolina voting guide.

Official portals in Arizona, Iowa, Michigan and Oklahoma

Arizona registers holders of an Arizona driver license or MVD-issued ID card online through AZMVDNow. [13] Iowa's online registration is open to people with an Iowa driver's license or non-operator ID. [21] Michigan's application is at Michigan.gov/Vote. [26] Oklahoma's OK Voter Portal requires an Oklahoma driver license or state ID and a signature on file with Service Oklahoma. [41]

Can you register to vote on Election Day?

In some states, yes. Nine states in the table describe a way to register through Election Day itself: California, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Wyoming. [14][21][24][26][29][32][33][50][51] North Carolina offers same-day registration during early voting only. [36] The documents differ: Iowa asks for proof of identity and current residence, Michigan for proof of residency. [21][26] Open your state's guide from the table before you go.

After you register: check your status, then plan your vote

Confirm that the registration went through. Vote.gov routes you to your state's registration status check, and the EAC's directory links to each state's lookup. [1][4] Texas calls its tool “Am I Registered?”, Georgia's is My Voter Page, and Ohio's is the Secretary of State's voter search website. [19][39][47] In Oklahoma, an approved applicant is mailed a Voter Identification Card as confirmation. [41]

A snapshot, not the last word This page reflects what election offices had published on September 17, 2026. Verify your date with your state or local election office, as the EAC tells voters to do. [4]

Questions and answers

How do I register to vote?

Go to vote.gov, select your state or territory and follow its official instructions. Depending on the state, you can register online, by mail with the National Mail Voter Registration Form, or in person at your local election office. [1][2]

What is the last day to register to vote in Texas?

October 5, 2026, to be eligible to vote in the November 3, 2026 election. The application must be postmarked, or received in the county voter registrar's office, by that date, and an application filled out online must still be printed and sent in. [47][48]

Is there a national voter registration deadline?

No. Vote.gov says there is no national deadline and that each state and territory sets its own rules. Federal law requires the states it covers to accept a valid application postmarked or received 30 days before a federal election, or closer to it if state law allows. [1][7]

What do I need to register to vote?

In most cases a driver's license or a state ID, USAGov says, and requirements vary by state. Under federal law the application carries your driver's license number or, if you have none, the last four digits of your Social Security number. [2][8]

How do military and overseas voters register to vote?

Through the Federal Voting Assistance Program, which lets U.S. citizens living outside the country, service members stationed abroad and their spouses or eligible family members register and request an absentee ballot. Florida, for example, accepts one form for both, the Federal Post Card Application. [2][17]

Can I register to vote online?

It depends on your state's rules, USAGov says; vote.gov shows the options for your state. Georgia, Arizona, Iowa and Oklahoma offer online registration to holders of a state driver's license or ID card, and in Texas an application filled out online must be printed and sent to the county voter registrar. [1][2][13][19][21][41][48]
